Tips and Tricks to soothe a sore throat fast!

By Leanne Pearson
1. Humidifier or steam to keep vocal cords moist
-In the dry winter months, I sleep with a humidifier in my bedroom. This prevents my voice from getting too dry at night.
-Vicks also makes a handy device you can use to steam your throat and sinuses!
-When you are in the shower, take big deep breaths and feel the steam nourishing your voice!
2. Drink room temperature water instead of ice cold water
This is something I have always been told by vocal coaches. The thought is that drinking room temperature water doesn’t “shock” your vocal cords. When we drink ice cold water it really does “freeze” your vocal cords making it harder to sing or even talk. It’s the same concept as when our hands get cold, which makes them stiff and hard to move or play an instrument. Stick with room temperature water whenever you can!
3. Saline nasal spray to help with any postnasal drip
Sometimes we can have a postnasal drip which can lead to a sore throat. Saline nasal spray is a salt spray that keeps everything clean and working as it should!
4. Oil of oregano
This is magical for a sore throat that is caused by any kind of viral or bacterial reason. It helps kill anything in your throat. You can drop it directly down your throat, which can burn horribly and taste terrible! Or mix it with water and gargle it!
5. Gargle salt and warm water
I’m sure you have heard of this one! It really works!
6. Stretch or massage your neck muscles
Any stretch that feels good to you will probably have a positive impact on your voice! Stretching loosens up the muscles that surround our vocal cords, and naturally less tension means singing with more ease.
7. My personal favourite, Throat Coat Tea by Traditional Medicinal
I have mentioned it before, and I will mention it again, this tea is magical! I drink it before shows, in the studio and on days when my voice feels tired and sore!
