Harvey Glatt Passes

Harvey Glatt. a huge supporter of all music (especially Canadian) and the arts. Ottawa legend, music icon, and visionary has passed.

Harvey (born March 28, 1934) was a Canadian music promoter, manager, broadcaster, record retailer, and record label owner who has been a pivotal figure in Canada's music industry for over six decades.

Born in Ottawa, Ontario, Glatt graduated from Glebe Collegiate Institute in 1951 and obtained a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in 1956 from the Clarkson College of Technology in Potsdam, New York

His passion for music emerged early - he became a regular reader of Billboard Magazine from age thirteen and got his start in broadcasting during college.

In 1957, Glatt opened his first retail music store, The Treble Clef, in Ottawa, which eventually grew into a chain of 15 record and audio stores. That same year, he began concert promotion, starting with a Pete Seeger performance. Through his companies Bass Clef Productions, Treble Clef Distribution, and Bytown Music Publishing, Glatt became a major force in Canadian music.

Glatt played a crucial role in developing Canadian talent, particularly through his management of Ottawa-area bands like The Children, which featured future stars Bruce Cockburn and David.. He was instrumental in bringing legendary international acts to Ottawa, including Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, and Johnny Cash.

In 1977, Glatt founded CHEZ-FM, an Ottawa-based rock radio station and later expanded into radio ownership across Ontario. He also operated Posterity Records from 1976-1981, releasing albums by artists like Lenny Breau and the Downchild Blues Band.

In 2007, Glatt was inducted into the Canadian Broadcast Hall of Fame and in 2014 received the Unsung Hero Award from the Canadian Folk Music Awards for his exceptional contributions to Canadian music. Throughout his career, he has been known as a generous philanthropist and mentor to countless Canadian artists.

Funeral Service to be held: Friday August 22nd @10AM, Memorial Chapel 1771 Cuba Ave. Ottawa, followed by burial at Memorial Gardens 2692 Bank St.
