Creating Social Media Content
If you’re a musician trying to grow your fanbase and reach new audiences who will give your music a home in their hearts, social media is likely one of the tools you’re using to help propagate your songs and build your career. After all, social platforms are powerful spaces to connect with and cultivate communities. With such fertile ground to plant the seeds of who you are and nurture what you want to share with others, getting started on these platforms can feel quite daunting. While I’m still getting a grasp of social media and the effective ways it can be used, in this article, I’m going to be sharing some of the ways I enjoy using social media to leverage my creativity and my music.
1. Creativity and Compelling Content
Social media is another avenue to explore and express your creativity. Different media can showcase different parts of who you are and simultaneously support your music. If you’re theatrical and love making people laugh, perhaps you can develop little skits in the form of short vertical videos and use your music as the sound in the background for Instagram and TikTok. If you’re a lyric-focused musician and have a notebook of all your ideas, consider taking a picture or sharing a blurb on X to give your followers a glimpse of your process. Performing live? Film it and post the full-length video on YouTube, with shorter clips to various other platforms! Social media is a great opportunity to be creative in ways outside of song!
If you don’t know where to start, that’s okay, too! I like to get inspired by the content that catches my eye and compels me to create content of my own. When you’re on any of these latforms, take inventory of the content other musicians are creating that are making you stop and watch, and like, comment, or share with a friend. Often, these are indicators as to the type of content you should be creating!
2. Consistency
If you’re creating content that is reflective of who you are and what you do in an authentic manner, then you’re already halfway there. Developing a content calendar such that audiences can become familiar with your brand will help solidify your consistency. Another way to be consistent is through the fonts and color-schemes you use to express your artistry. Having a consistent and recognizable image will help audiences identify and remember you.
3. Engagement
Fostering a connection with your audience is critical to creating and nurturing your community of followers. Responding to comments, direct messages, and mentions are easy ways to communicate with your audience directly, as well as posing questions, running polls, taking votes, and other fun ways to make your social platforms dialogues and promote engagement.
4. Hashtags
To increase your discoverability as an artist and reach the listeners who might resonate with your music, you can harness the power of hashtags. Research popular hashtags that are relevant and apply to your brand and music and utilize as many as are suggested by best practices.
Social media is a garden of opportunity for you to propel your career and let the colors of your creativity blossom. By creating authentic and compelling content, staying consistent, engaging with your audience, and employing hashtags, you will begin to develop a fanbase and grow an invaluable community of listeners!
